If you haven’t been able to tell so far, we here at PJD are big fans of diamonds. We’ve already talked about “The 4 C’s of Finding the Perfect Diamond,” written the definitive “Guide to Understanding Diamond Cut,” and now present a (somewhat) in-depth exploration into three of our favorite diamond shapes, the Princess, Radiant, and eternally-popular Round diamond cut.
All bright, beautiful, and splendid, these three diamond shapes have a variety of advantages and are worth understanding before exploring the wide world of fine, fashion, and bridal jewelry.
In collaboration with the diamond experts at Corinne Jewelers, located in Toms River, New Jersey, please enjoy our explanation of the various “ins and outs” of Princess, Radiant, and Round shaped diamond stones.
- Round Cut Diamonds
Today’s most popular diamond shape, round cut diamonds are a (perhaps obviously) circular-shaped, and feature an unsurpassed level of sparkle and diamond shine. Because of their greater cone shape, round cut diamonds are able to maximize the amount of light returned from every one of the stone’s 58 skillfully-crafted facets.
In the realm of engagement rings, round cut diamonds engagement rings make for some of the most classic cut engagement rings of all styles, designers, and types.
For example, designers like A. Jaffe, Gabriel NY, and Simon G, have been making engagement rings featuring round cut center diamonds in an array of styles ranging from subtle and demure solitaire types, to halo, sidestone, and three stone pieces that are as extravagant as they are elegant.
- Princess Cut Diamonds
Coming onto the scene in the 1971 when Basil Watermeyer patented what was later to become the princess diamond, princess cut diamonds are second in popularity only to the round diamond shape and are truly a masterpiece of stone-cutting innovation. Built with a square top and an upside-down pyramid like shape, princess cut diamonds bridge the gap between traditional diamond glamour and contemporary, modern, and fashion-forward gemstone aesthetics.
Also, similar to round diamond rings, princess cut engagement rings are incredibly versatile, extremely easy-to-find, and look amazing with rings of all varieties. Pictured below are engagement rings featuring a princess cut center diamond, all of which are united by a shared sense of confidence and glamour.
- Radiant Cut Diamonds
Extremely popular in the 1980’s, radiant cut diamonds can be thought of as a mixture between a cushion and princess cut diamond. Somewhat rectangular-shaped, radiant cut diamonds can have more than 70 facets, meaning that radiant diamonds are able to reflect back more light than princess and round cut diamonds, creating a more striking sparkle and diamond fire.
When it comes to radiant cut engagement rings, it becomes tougher to find a ring style that most accurately portrays the stone’s natural shine. As a result, unlike princess and round cut engagement rings, radiant cut stones look better in three stone and side stone type pieces, yet bring a level of sophistication, elegance, and timelessness unavailable to other diamond cuts.
Where to find the Perfect Round, Princess, and Radiant Diamond Engagement Ring
When it comes to finding the perfect round, princess, or radiant engagement ring, the best place to find the ring of your dreams is at your local fine jewelry retailer. While it may seem more simple to find a diamond ring online, the truth is that you’ll never truly be sure that the ring that you’re buying is the ring you’re going to get.
Instead, check out retailer like Corinne Jewelers! At stores like Corinne Jewelers, you can see in person your ring, and with the help of a skilled diamond expert, you can be sure that your diamond will be of the absolute highest-quality possible.
