Spring, summer, autumn, winter. Four seasons require different jewelry, and God help you if you wear the wrong look for the season.
(We’re joking.)
Still, that joke does raise an interesting question: What does it mean to have a proper look for a season? Jewelry, like clothing, can possess styles, colors, and themes that reflect what’s going on in the world around it.
When a person wears jewelry that recapitulates the essence of the season, they fit in their environment better, giving them a kind of beauty that can only come from that kind of harmony with nature. Today, we want to take a look at some style ideas to match you with any of the 4 seasons!
Spring
Spring is the time of year most closely associated with rebirth and growth. Flowers and birds are the most immediate symbols of this season, and most of the time, people choose to pull their most colorful dresses out of the closets during May and March.
If you’re looking to accessorize for your spring look, aim for jewelry that’s rich with pinks, purples, and pastel tones. Also, look for flower-shaped jewelry, like the Madison L Ariana collection — this collection’s curved rings remind the viewer like gem-studded posies plucked and wrapped around a finger.
Summer
If you’re in Los Angeles like me, summer is the time for immediately getting sunburnt when you step outside. But for everyone else, summer is the time to put on their best bikini, embrace the sun, and go lay by the pool.
Thus, summer’s top looks are inspired by the yellows of the sun and the blues of the beach & pool. Circular looks reiterate the symbols we just mentioned.
A designer like Tacori may be more known for their springtime looks like Color Medley and Sonoma Skies, but check out the Island Rains collection for a mix of blues you’ll love — turquoise, topaz, and blue quartz that all blend together for jewelry that’s right for the pool.
Autumn
Ironically, for a season that’s a time of winding down and ending, autumn is also a time of brilliant colors. People dress for autumn in comfortable clothes that tend toward dull shades, punctuated by colorful scarves and accessories.
When you’re shopping around your local jewellery store for something to match the season, you may want to look for a piece of jewelry whose shape is subtle.
Also, when picking gemstones, aim for stones whose color is rich, but subdued. Garnets, labradorite, darker opals, and cognac diamonds are all ideal choices for jewels.
Winter
Winter is a surprisingly easy season to accessorize for. Dark colors and white metals work remarkably well to recapitulate December, January, and February. If you live in a latitude where snow’s common, you’ll be familiar with the interplay of black and white, but there’s no reason why you can’t see the same in your jewelry.
Take a designer like John Hardy as a good example of this theory in action. Primarily working in sterling silver that’s been darkened in places with oxidation, John Hardy also adds black diamonds in many of its collections.
The end result is a brilliant wintertime look whose curled and slender shapes remind the viewer of bare trees and branches.
