Humans have been wearing jewelry as fashion since the first time ochre was painted on a person’s skin and shells were woven into their hair. While jewelry has, in the millennia since its introduction, been used to signify political status (military badges, for example), religious affiliation (crosses and Stars of David), and cultural affiliation (mangalasutra), the original nature of jewelry as “self-beautification” has continued into the modern era. Jewelry for the sake of fashion — “fashion jewelry”, appropriately — comes in a wide variety of styles, but more often than not, contemporary fashion jewelry comes in the form of rings. But what is it about fashion jewelry that motivates people beyond sociopolitical reasons?
To look at the pieces that ArtCarved puts on display immediately brings to mind the Art Deco period, appropriately enough for a brand that celebrates 167 years of excellence. Many of the designs that ArtCarved has put created for its vintage and classic collections are riffs on designs created by the bijoutiers-artistes and bijoutiers-joailliers that graced the workshops of Paris and Nancy; and also the brilliance of the Great Depression-era artists who designed airy works out of minimal resources. Experimenting during a period of time stretching from 1910 to 1940, Art Deco jewelers played with conventions of cut, stone, and geometry to design styles that remain timeless. With a generation of fiancées looking back to their grandmothers’ and great-grandmothers’ generations as inspiration for their contemporary style, ArtCarved’s art and engagement rings are both “vintage” and “absolutely modern”.
Something we think people might like more than the main character and heroine in movies or books is when the ultimate villain is female because there’s much more wicked intent and manifested cruelty behind a villainess’ secret agenda. Even though no woman should wish to be like any of these evil women on our list of villain inspired jewelry, there is still something to admire them for like their tenacity and alluring beauty (for only some of them of course).

Ella Fitzgerald once sang “I never knew the charm of spring/I never met it face to face/I never knew my heart could sing/I never missed a warm embrace/ Til April in Paris”. April babies are probably the luckiest when it comes to their gemstone because it is the most sought after. Yes, we’re talking about diamonds (but you could probably tell that from the title of this blog post). To form diamonds, all they need is 725,000 pounds of pressure, 1 to 3.3 billion years, and high temperatures unlivable for anything with a pulse. Also, these gemstones are harder to find because they’re hidden miles deep in the Earth, so yeah…. they’re expensive for a reason.
Diamonds for a very long time have been associated with healing and everlasting love because of their strength. Diamonds are so strong, they can only be cut with other diamonds or lasers. Because of this and the intense light they reflect, ancient civilizations believed that diamonds had healing powers to cure diseases and cleanse blood.
Check out our list of gifts for that April baby you know below:
