Fictional as they are, the Bennets are one of literary’s most treasured families. Appearing in Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” since then the Bennets have continued to charm readers centuries later. The daughters: diverse, spunky, and heroines for many readers (including all of us at Premiere Jewelry), each have readily formed opinions on proper conduct and love, and despite general drama, many find blissful happiness in marriage.
While only three wed in the novel, we thought it would be fun to take a look at all our Bennet girls’ personalities and pick a contemporary engagement ring that might suit them best.
Lydia Bennet
First up, the youngest, Lydia Bennet. At 16, she is considered “the most determined flirt that ever made herself or her family ridiculous.” And while we know that dear Lydia ends up with the vile Mr. Wickham, his modest income is only at the expense of Darcy and his efforts to woo Elizabeth. Anyhow, as the most spoiled of the sisters, we think her ring would have enough glamour that she would be eager to boast about it on the streets of London, and would include a darker toned twist that would make her stand out amongst her peers.
If Lydia lived now, her ideal choice would go to Tacori‘s elegant round brilliant cut (model #2518RD65) from their Simply Tacori collection of engagement rings. Available in 18-karat rose gold, white gold, yellow gold, and platinum, what makes this design spectacular is the unique halo addition and the sparkling collection of sapphires used to enhance the look of the center stone. Additionally, the gorgeous band is only made more stunning with Tacori’s vintage milgrain design.
Catherine “Kitty” Bennet
Just slightly older than Lydia, Kitty Bennet’s role in the novel is hardly one to look up to. More a follower than a leader, she is often seen giggling about with Lydia and flirting with the soldiers who arrive in town. In the novel, she is often irritable over silly matters and jealous of her younger sister’s opportunity to go out in society (at little to no expense of their own). Her marital status remains unknown, but hopefully under greater influence from Mary rather than Lydia she ends up in a more prudent marriage.
For a slightly older, wiser, but still a chronic fun and flirtatious gal, we thought one of Kirk Kara‘s creations would be ideal. From their Angelique collection, Kirk Kara has crafted a magnificent fusion of elegance and charm with this engagement ring (model #SS6967-RS). Made in 18-karat white gold, but also available in platinum, the intricate band design seems to present a sophisticated while still youthful look for the wearer. Additionally, it features a round cut center stone and several additional round brilliant sidestones adorning the band of the ring.
Mary Bennet
Less is definitely more for the middle child, Mary, whose calm demeanor is the only one of her kind in the Bennet family. Contrary to the rest of her family, Mary prefers reading and criticizing others social behaviors to doing much socializing of her own with her peers or potential beau. Still, the girl is likely to have garnered the attention of some young handsome clergyman and made a sound and sensible marriage.
For the Bennet who prefers the company of rocks and books to her fellow peers, we’ve chosen a lovely ring by Jeff Copper. From their Laurel collection, the above beauty (model #1615) comes with a classic round brilliant center stone set in a bold prong setting, but is made the more special with Jeff Copper’s dazzling floral inspired band design. Perfect for a sure-to-have-been Bennet cutie, this ring is simply beautiful without being overly dramatic. With this on her hand, even Mary would be sure to come across her fair share of amusement with her doting peer’s praises.
Jane Bennet
The eldest, at an estimated 22, Jane is considered the real beauty of the family. She has all the looks and the sweetness desired in a companion and amiable qualities of any good girl from the time. While she is said to have received her fair share of handsome prose at a young age, it is not until the eligible Mr. Bingley comes to town that Jane really falls in love. Similar to her in mind and temper, Bingley may be rich, but it would be fair to assume that a ring that encapsulates the love between both would be elegant without being too flashy.
Jane’s classic beauty and refined sense of self is deserving of a ring with a long-spanding history and class. For Jane, the luxurious designs from A. Jaffe suit her perfectly. Her exquisite taste and sure to be delicate features would look wonderful with this find from A. Jaffe (model #1856Q-204). Created for their Quilted Collection, the ring features A. Jaffe’s one-of-a-kind quilted setting and a round brilliant center stone. Simple in design, this fabulous find doesn’t need intricate designs or over-the-top embellishments. Instead, its glitzy elegance is all achieved via its spectacular array of diamonds upon diamonds. Built to last, an A. Jaffe engagement ring is sure to retain its sparkle for a lifetime.
Elizabeth Bennet
Pride and Prejudice main protagonist, the envy of all savvy modern girls, and our eternal badass literary hero, Lizzy Bennet is by far the smartest of the Bennet sisters. She might not be as obviously beautiful as Jane, but she is still her equal in all other regards and unlike other young females, is not afraid to speak her mind. To match her sharp wit, there is no literary worthy male but Fitzwilliam Darcy! As wealthy as he may be, his generous and good-natured heart ultimately win over our dear Lizzy and both live out happy lives together (we hope).
The love story between Jane and Darcy has no literary equal. Without sharing so much as a kiss, the two enter into one of the most complex and engaging love stories ever and have enraptured young women for years since. For their iconic love, a Verragio wonder seems ideal. Handsome enough to tempt even the pickiest of brides, for Elizabeth, we thought she deserved this princess cut three stone stunner over other designs. Romantic, as they are alluring, as they are radiant, as they are all pretty things, the ring pictured above (model #707-4P) is one of our all time favorites. Perfect from every angle, Verragio’s hand-crafted milgrain designs are unparalleled and absolutely mesmerizing.
And viola! There is our list. Enjoy this gif of my personal favorite Mr. Darcy.
Yeah, I know he’s not your personal favorite Darcy (you “FirthForeverGirl”), but the scene in which he first confesses his love for Lizzy makes me swoon time and time again most ardently (new-heights-of-romance-sort-of-thing, those-looks-and-those-eyes-sort-of-thing).
Macfadyen is my Darcy.
These are just our fun picks for the Bennet sisters. We are sure there are plenty more vintage inspired engagement rings out there that work well with the sisters or perhaps you’d like to see a list of rings for other P&P characters.
