Thinking about Tacori: What Sets This Designer Apart from the Rest

June 12, 2019

Tacori, the esteemed California designer, has been around as an independent company since 1979, but even before then, the founders of the company, Gilda Balian & Haig Tacorian, drew from a wellspring of jewelry-making expertise that stretched back centuries. Those Armenian and Romanian aesthetic touches can still be found in Tacori bridal and fashion jewelry.

Given our history at Premiere, you can probably tell we’re huge fans of Tacori, but today, we’re going to take a look at what makes Tacori and their designs tick.

The Tacori Crescent

The iconic factor that sets Tacori apart is their application of a “hidden crescent” in all of their pieces. The double-crescent is inspired by the top of a heart, invoking the beauty of love in the bridal pieces that Tacori designs.

Of course, the crescent comes in a variety of different styles. For example, the Classic Crescent collection builds the crescents out of milgrain beading and diamonds, opening small pavilions of light between. On the other hand, the Reverse Crescent collection of Tacori wedding bands and engagement rings makes the crescents out of the open pavilions. Almost like Ancient Roman bridges (like those in Romania!), the metal and diamonds create an effect like a tall arched bridge over a river.

Platinum

Platinum, like other precious metals used in the jewelry industry, is made from alloys of pure platinum with a small amount of base metal for the sake of durability and strength. The jewelry standard for platinum is 90% platinum to other metals, but Tacori adheres to its own in-house standard, devising a special alloy of 95% platinum to other metals.

What’s the effect of this? Tacori makes a great many of its jewelry from the 78th element, and the quality invested in the raw material translates into quality pieces. For example, the RoyalT collection of engagement rings and wedding bands is primarily made from platinum, and this luxurious line takes advantage of it.

When you’re looking for a diamond ring, platinum makes an ideal framework for showing off the stones, and RoyalT reveals that: The eternity style of diamonds and hefty center stones are well-exhibited by the pale shine of platinum.

California Exuberance

Based in California, Tacori has absorbed a great deal of California’s culture and aesthetic scene over the decades it’s been in business. What does this mean, exactly? The most apparent example of this theory can be found in the boho asymmetry, handcraftedness, and sheer color found in their fashion jewelry lines.

The 925 sterling silver elegance of the Island Rains collection throws handfuls of different blue stones, like topaz and turquoise into whimsical patterns whose size and brightness make them perfect for summer and beaches. You can find the same trends in their Lilac Blossoms and Color Medley collections.

But even Tacori engagement rings and wedding bands share this trait: The Simply Tacori collection features playfully DIY-style solitaires that are extremely popular with contemporary women — and the designer also adds plenty of choices with the 2010’s favorite metal, rose gold.
